HARRISBURG – Rep. Rob Mercuri (R-Allegheny) issued the following statement regarding his reaction to Gov. Tom Wolf’s annual budget address:

“It was disappointing to hear that the governor's plan today, during these consequential times, focused primarily on a Personal Income Tax increase on families and small businesses during the generational challenges of the pandemic and economic crisis.

“Not everything is solvable by throwing additional government money at the problem; actually, few problems are solved that way. Instead, we need to get the Commonwealth back to work as quickly as possible by ending and not repeating the arbitrary restrictions on restaurants, fitness centers and public schools. Pennsylvania students want to get back to school.

“We need tax reform and tax relief that incentivizes businesses and individuals to innovate and create value, not tax increases and wealth redistribution that paper over problems with the next generation’s money. Pennsylvania workers want to get back to work.

“We need to swiftly deliver the vaccine to every waiting arm, so my colleagues and I will be voting this week to mobilize the Pennsylvania National Guard to do so. The Commonwealth is at the back of the class on vaccine distribution nationally, and Gov. Wolf is talking about raising our taxes. It's very disappointing. Pennsylvania families want to get back to normal.

“Pennsylvania needs leadership from its government, and the state Legislature is ready to lead.”
