HARRISBURG – Rep. Rob Mercuri (R-Allegheny) released the following statement regarding Gov. Tom Wolf’s plan to offer five days of “verification leave” to be used between Dec. 20, 2021, and March 31, 2022, if an administration employee provides proof that they received the COVID-19 vaccine. Any leave time not used by these employees will be paid back to them.
“Public trust in our institutions is built upon the foundations of equal treatment and transparency. This policy, which was decided out of the public eye, goes against good governance and fairness in our Commonwealth. Receiving a COVID-19 vaccine treatment should be a choice afforded to Pennsylvanians without government influence or coercion.
“Those who are willing may choose to be vaccinated for their safety and the greater good while valuing each individual’s medical freedom in the matter. We can and must do both.
“As Treasurer Stacy Garrity noted, this move is also disastrous fiscal policy and would cost Pennsylvania taxpayers more than $100 million.
“I stand with Treasurer Garrity in calling on Gov. Wolf to scrap this plan entirely. It is time that this administration joins House Republicans in supporting taxpayers and families through fiscal responsibility, personal freedom and good governance.”
