HARRISBURG –Rep. Rob Mercuri (R-Allegheny) announced he will serve on the House Finance, Education and Government Oversight committees for the 2023-24 legislative session. In addition, he will serve as vice chair of the House Republican Policy Committee.
“I am excited to get to work moving PA forward through these committee assignments and as an active member of the state House of Representatives,” Mercuri said. “I’m looking forward to continuing to work towards real change in Pennsylvania to improve the lives of people and families as they seek to thrive here.”
The Finance Committee oversees matters relating to taxation and fiscal policy, investment of the Commonwealth’s money and regulations of the Department of Revenue. In addition, it reviews legislation dealing with the operation of the Pennsylvania Lottery, as well as bills regarding the Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program and the Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract for the Elderly (PACE) Program, both of which are funded by the lottery.
“We must lower taxes and spend responsibly by making targeted investments in our economy, schools and other vital programs and services,” Mercuri said. “As Pennsylvanians continue to face runaway inflation and financial pressures, we must drive growth and hold agencies accountable. I’m proud to be a part of a committee that seeks to do just that.”
The Education Committee works on state issues involving public and private schools, encompassing pre-K through grade 12 basic education, as well as post-secondary education.
“Every child deserves a fair chance to make something of themselves, and that starts in the classroom,” Mercuri said. “A student’s ZIP code shouldn’t determine their quality of education. We must prioritize our students so every child can have access to the highest quality education the Commonwealth has to offer.”
The House Government Oversight Committee investigates matters referred to it by the speaker, majority leader or minority leader. Its aim is to provide better legislative oversight on how tax dollars are spent and how state agencies operate. The committee mirrors the federal House Committee on Oversight and Reform.
“The government must be accountable to the people it exists to serve,” said Mercuri. “On the Government Oversight Committee, I will seek out the best version of government that works in the best interest of Pennsylvanians first and does not overstep its bounds.”
